Post-Term Pregnancies Tied To Emotional and Behavioral Problems In Kids


What’s New: Kids born to women with post-term pregnancies are at higher risk of experiencing emotional and behavioral problems, according to a new study.

Important Detail: Researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam studied over 5,000 babies in the Netherlands and found that nearly 4% were born pre-term mothers, while 7% were born post-term. Both groups of babies had a higher risk of emotional and behavioral problems when they were 1.5 and 3 years old.

The post-term kids were two times more likely to have ADHD symptoms compared to normal-term kids.

Factors like height and weight of the mother, education level, smoking or alcohol consumption, family income, ethnicity, or the mental health of the mother at the time of pregnancy didn’t seem to explain the connection between post-term birth and psychological problems.
