Sports Hernia Linked To An Ordinary Hip Problem
What’s New: Femoral acetabular impingement, a hip disorder common in athletes, may be a risk factor for sports hernia in those athletes.
Important Detail: Orthopedic researchers from University of Virginia looked at the database of 43 patients who had sports hernia surgeries from 1999 and 2011.
X-rays, CT scans and MRIs showed some evidence of femoral acetabular impingement among 36 of those patients.
Lead study author Dr. Kostas Economopoulos said that the study revealed that the elevated stress across the groin is due to altered hip mechanics in patients with femoral acetabular impingement.
Conclusion: The study did not confirm that femoral acetabular impingement and odds of sports hernia share a cause-and-effect relationship. But the authors believe that the study can help physicians in recommending better treatment options to patients with this condition.

Women Who Use Statins May Be At Higher Diabetes Risk
A new U.S. study suggested that the statins may increase diabetes risk in middle-aged and older females. But the researchers said that the benefits outweigh risks.
The study found that women who took any kind of statin at the beginning of the 6 to 7-year study were about 50% more likely to develop diabetes than those who did not took statins.
Yunsheng Ma and his colleagues from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester wrote, “Use of statins among postmenopausal women is linked to higher risk of diabetes mellitus development.”
The research team assessed data from the Women’s Health Initiative that included over 150,000 women without diabetes and were middle-aged or older.
Under the study, some of the women were told to change their diet or to take vitamins or daily hormone therapy, while other weren’t prescribed diet changes or lifestyle changes.
At the study’s beginning, the study participants completed health surveys regarding whether they took statins or not, also about their other diabetes risks, like physical activity and weight levels.
Overall, just over 10,200 females were positively diagnosed with diabetes, with females who took any form of statin i.e. about 1 in 14 of the women involved in the study. On average, the risk of diabetes was 48% higher in statin users as compared to non-users.
Some of the previous studies that involved men have also suggested 10 to 12% rise in risk of diabetes among those who took statins.
Even though the reasons were not clear at that time, but it was found that statins affects the muscles and liver in such a way that may lead body to produce little more glucose than it normally would, or make users less physically active.
Thus, statin users should opt other ways to lower their diabetes risk, like becoming more physically active, by losing weight, and should get their blood sugar monitored regularly.

Important Detail: Researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam studied over 5,000 babies in the Netherlands and found that nearly 4% were born pre-term mothers, while 7% were born post-term. Both groups of babies had a higher risk of emotional and behavioral problems when they were 1.5 and 3 years old.
The post-term kids were two times more likely to have ADHD symptoms compared to normal-term kids.
Factors like height and weight of the mother, education level, smoking or alcohol consumption, family income, ethnicity, or the mental health of the mother at the time of pregnancy didn’t seem to explain the connection between post-term birth and psychological problems.
Conclusion: According to the lead author of the study, Hanan El Marroun, more research is required for determining the causality of the connection and whether the connection persists after 3 years of a

Important Detail: Researchers from the Rutgers University and the University of Virginia carried out 3 different experiments in which kids were given choice between animals and attractive toys.
The study showed that the kids spent more time with animals than with the toys. They also noted that the animals generated more interest and curiosity in kids than the toys did. This led researchers to think that animals help kids learn.
According to Vanessa LoBue from Rutgers University, kids find animals so attractive that it indicates that possession of an animal as a pet may be beneficial in their lives.
Conclusion: The study build ups the thought that animals could be a good source of learning in kids.
